Upper Chesapeake Bay Report
The weather has been stable and warm and the bass are busy spawning. The Upper Chesapeake Bay continues to put out some exceptional catches. Several fish in the six pound class have come into the boat over the last two weeks with four and five pound fish being caught every day. Fish on the bay are spawning in the grass beds and in the protected cuts and marinas all over the Upper Chesapeake Bay.

Adjusting to conditions has been the main factor in fishing among the massive grass flats on the Upper Bay. When the fish began to take the flats in a pre-spawn pattern, baits such as chatterbaits, Death Shimmer spinnerbaits, Mop jig and squarebills where the dominant baits. As the fish began to make the turn toward the spawn, soft plastic creature baits and Senkos began to dominate the bite. This often happens when fish turn from a feeding mode in the prespawn to a non-feeding mode focused on the spawn. The fish continue to spawn in the Upper Bay and the soft plastic bite is expected to dominate catches right through the end of May.
One of my favorite anglers in my boat this week was Tyler. His is thirteen years old and had an exceptional day fishing with me and his grandfather Ed. Ed introduced Tyler to bass fishing and Tyler has proven to be a quick study. Tyler caught a five fish limit of Chesapeake largemouth that weighed over 21 pounds. This stringer was anchored by an amazing 5.6 pound bass. Tyler aspires to be a professional angler and is off to a great start.
Grass has really moved around the flats this year. Good looking milfoil beds are everywhere. The bass will inhabit the grass beds for the next several months as the spawn ends and they turn their focus to feeding. Grass and current always dominate the bite in the post spawn. Good luck out there.
